Based at the Rural Business School at Stoke Climsland, we are looking for an experienced individual to work with researchers involved in the Agri-tech Cornwall Project by providing support to a research project on multi-species swards.

Job Description

The role will include on-farm data collection and monitoring as well as the development of on-line tools.

Applicants must be educated to degree-level, have an appreciation of sustainable agricultural practice, particularly in relation to grassland management, diverse swards and soil management, have a sound knowledge of farming and an interest in agricultural research.

The successful candidate will work with researchers involved in the Agri-tech Cornwall Project by providing support to a research project on multi-species swards. Duties will include:

  • Co-ordinating collection of data from farms participating in the Toolbox of Multi-species Swards (TOMS) project, so as to provide information on the potential benefits of multi-species swards. This work will involve visiting farms across Cornwall to help establish new multi-species swards, collecting soil and forage samples, conducting botanical surveys, collecting other data on farm management practices, liaising with farmers, arranging for the analysis of samples, collating data and undertaking basic data analysis;
  • Providing assistance with the development of a web-based tool around multi-species swards, including distilling scientific research into user-friendly formats and carrying out surveys;
  • Collaborating with researchers from other institutions; and
  • Providing general support to other Duchy College Agri-tech Cornwall projects as and when required.

The 267-hectare Duchy Home Farm at Stoke Climsland supports 270 Holstein dairy cows, with 200 followers, plus 110 breeding ewes and arable cropping. The farm is utilised for livestock and crop research and the building of the Future Farm Dairy Systems Platform is a nationally important development for dairy Agri-tech research and development.

Agri-tech Cornwall is a £10m project part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund to increase Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) in the agri-tech sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It is a partnership of the region’s leading stakeholders in agri-tech RD&I: Duchy College, Rothamsted Research, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, and the Cornwall Development Company. The partners and other knowledge providers are working proactively with companies to solve sector growth challenges through RD&I, leading to new and improved products and processes which in turn will drive growth and productivity.
